Notes

-----------------------------------------------
William Woods joined the 18th Ohio Voluntary Infantry, Co. G,  Jan 1864. By this time the regiment had been fighting since 1861 and was due to be mustered out 9 Nov 1864 after serving 3 years. The 18th started out with 930 soldiers and when mustered out Nov 1864 - only 390 were left. Most chose to return home after three years of fighting however 89 chose to reenlist as the 18th Regiment Veteran Infantry.

William Woods was one of these.

The 18th  organized at Chattanooga, TN  in Oct 1864, and consisted of consolidated Veterans of the 1st-2d-18th- 24th-and 35th Ohio Regiments.  It was then attached to Post of Chattanooga, Department of the Cumberland until Nov 1864. They organized just in time for the Battle of Nashville where William Woods was killed on 15 Dec 1864. The date of death is listed in the Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio in the War of Rebellion 1861-1866. He was buried at Nashville National Cemetery on 17 Dec 1864. His grave number is 2673, section E. His Regiment was mustered out at Augusta, GA, 09 Oct 1865, and discharged at Columbus, OH,  22 Oct 1865 sadly without William.

Unfortunately, William joined the war at the worst year. 1864 was one the bloodiest years of the Civil War. His nephew James Woods, son of Robert Woods, died 13th Jan 1865 at the Battle of Chattanooga and is buried at Chattanooga National Cemetery in Chattanooga, TN.

From his enlistment papers; William Woods,  18 years old, from Ward Township, Hocking Co, OH, occupation; farmer, volunteered 05  Jan 1864 at Nelsonville, OH to serve for three years. He was 6 feet,1 inch tall; complexion- Fair; Eyes-Gray; Hair- Auburn.
